How to get the most from your quote

Picture this: everything is set for your next video project, you just need a few sets of multilingual subtitles to accompany it. Or, you’ve recently rebranded your business, and need a professional IVR messaging system put in place. Perhaps you need some help adjusting your newest social media ad so it’s suitable for a global audience?

Whatever it is, from voiceovers and translations, to subtitles and localisation, our expert team here at Matinée Multilingual will no doubt be able to help you. With over 30 years in the industry, there’s not much we haven’t been asked to assist with – so, where to start?

To get the ball rolling with your next project, we will first supply you with a quote. For us to give you the most accurate, clear and transparent estimate, there are certain things you can do to get the most from your quote. To help, we’ve put together this handy guide…

Include all the details

In order for us to provide the most accurate quote, we need to know *all* about your project. When requesting a quote for subtitles, please tell us the approximate length of the video, the language(s) required, and any ideas of budget.

Being clear about what you desire and including as much detail as you can will help us provide the most exact quote we can. Remember, if you have any budget restrictions, please include them, and we can work with you to achieve what you require, without breaking the bank.

Of course, the quoting process will differ based on the type of project you’re working on, so here are a few pointers for each category…

When quoting for voice-overs, we base all costs on the script(s) you require recording. Including your scripts and/or their word count will enable us to give you the most precise quote we can.

It’s also important to tell us which languages you need, and what your delivery expectations are, so we know whether you’ll want audio files, or the recording mixed to a video, implemented to a PPT, or integrated into your e-learning platform.

Describing the style and tone of the voice artist you want will help us provide appropriate demos for you to browse, and help give us more of an idea about rates. Lastly, don’t forget to let us know whether you’ll require live direction during the recording, and how the audio will be used – is it for an explainer, a TV ad, a podcast…?

Including details of how the recording will be used will also help us determine whether usage fees will apply. In short, sometimes additional fees will be charged alongside the standard recording fee if the recording will be used to generate profit.

The most important things for you to include when requesting a subtitling quote are details about the videos, specifically how many there are and what the total duration is. Don’t forget to also let us know the source language of the videos and the target language(s) required, so we have a clear idea of your project.

Much like with voice-over recordings, it’s also helpful to know the delivery spec you’ll be expecting – do you want the subtitles fully burnt in, or would you prefer a subtitle file such as SRT or VTT? Any other details, like special formatting or specific fonts you had in mind, will be beneficial to know so we can factor this into your quote.

Lastly, with quoting for translations, a lot of the same rules apply. Key pieces of information like how many words you need translated, and the source and target languages, will be essential for us when providing you with an accurate quote.

Details about the actual content of the text will be helpful too, so we can use specialist linguists based on the subject. We can also provide a second linguistic review of the translations, so please let us know if this is something you’d be interested in, as well as including any translation style guides you feel would be beneficial.
