Origins of the French language and accent

English in French accent voiceover talent agency

In France, Metropolitan French (that which is spoken in Paris) is said to be the standard language. You will not only hear French throughout France, but in many places throughout the world. In fact, there are officially 29 countries where the French language is spoken. These include 21 countries in Africa and the rest from North America and Europe, as well as Vanuatu, which is in the South Pacific Ocean.

In Canada for example, you will hear Quebec French and Acadian French, both of which are spoken in Quebec. Swiss French is spoken in an area of Switzerland known as Romandie, which does not differ much from standard French.

Then there is Belgium French, spoken by the people of Belgium. It too is similar to standard French but it does contain some loan words from Dutch and other languages.

France was conquered by the Romans and at that time the people of Gaul in France spoke a language known as Gaulish, which was a Celtic language. However, this was soon replaced by Latin. In the 9th century the French language was called Old French, until the middle of the 13th century when it became known as middle French. During the 17th century the French Academy was founded in order to improve the French language and its use.

In the Medieval times when William the Conqueror came to Britain, he only spoke French and the language was spoken throughout William’s court. Nowadays French voiceovers speaking English with French accents, are very popular in advertising French products such as perfume and cars.
