History of Matinée Multilingual – A 40-year journey

Late 1970s – Early 1980s

Chris Broderick runs a decorating business while playing bass in a mod band, The Crooks. Time in recording studios sparks his interest in audio and technology.

1982

Chris leaves the band and opens a recording studio in Reading. Matinée Music is founded at 132 Oxford Road — still the company’s home today.

Late 1980s

The studio grows into a 24-track recording facility as the industry shifts from vinyl and analogue to CDs and digital audio.

Early 1990s

Matinée pivots from music recording to corporate voice over and video audio. Rebrands as Matinée Sound & Vision.

Mid–Late 1990s

The business expands into multimedia, video production, and live events. Rebrands again as Matinée Multimedia. Team grows to 80 staff across five buildings.

Early 2000s

The business becomes Matinée Multilingual, operating from two buildings at Oxford Road.

2010s

Services evolve to include subtitling and captioning, alongside voice over and translation, as media moves fully online.

2020–2021

The company adapts smoothly to remote-working during Covid-19, supported by strong digital infrastructure.

Today

The business is run by Lauren and Callum, with Chris stepping back after 40 years. Matinée Multilingual continues delivering premium voice over, translation, and localisation services for a global, digital world.

Transcreation and Voice-Over for Space City

Space City is an award-winning production and TV advertising agency that has worked with exciting brands such as Qatar Airways, Palmer’s and Virgin Group.

In this collaboration, they required a Qatar Airways x UEFA Champions League star-studded TV commercial to be translated and transcreated (culturally adapted for local audiences) to promote the partnership between football and travel.

Matinée Multilingual has done an outstanding job sourcing voice talent and recording voiceovers for 20 language versions of an animated health education video. I’ve particularly appreciated their persistence in identifying voice actors for some less common languages (Rohingya, Karen, Khmer) that they originally thought they would not be able to deliver. They have been responsive, flexible, patient throughout a long process. And most importantly, Matinée has consistently provided top quality voice recordings. I would not hesitate to work with Matinée again on future projects.
