Origins of the Italian language and accent

Around 500BC Italy was inhabited by small settlements from Greece and France and a group from Turkey called Etruscans. They established a number of towns including what is now the City of Bologna.

Rome was founded in around 753 and it soon became the capital of the Roman Empire, which was spreading through Italy and beyond. The Romans spoke Latin and the Italians spoke a varied amount of regional dialects influenced by Latin.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Italy was conquered by a number of different rulers and the country split up into a number of different states. However, things began to change around about the 14th century when Italy became an important trading centre and people from all over the world came to the country. Italy became famous for its art and culture and produced a number of world class painters, writers, poets and architects.

It was during this time that the Italian poet, Dante wrote a set of poems called the Commedia. He wrote using the Tuscan language and his works, along with that of another famous poet by the name of Giovanni Boccaccio was widely read. The Tuscan language then started to become the standard language used by educated Italians and eventually became the official language. Regional dialects continued to be used and all of them are close to Latin. Sicilian, from the island of Sicily, Sardinian and Corsican are dialects of Italian. Other dialects include Neapolitan from Naples and Venetian from Venice.
