Video translation services from a supplier you can trust
Matinée Multilingual have been in the business of Video Translations for over 25 years. It all started from our recording studios based in Reading, near London. During the 90’s many international companies asked us to translate and re-voice their corporate video content. In those days everything was about analogue video tape, the Internet had not been invented yet!
These days, almost everything we do is for use on the internet. Businesses are still asking us to translate their video content into any of over 80 different languages, with a either re-voiced soundtrack, or with subtitles and captions. Or a mix of all three.
The process starts with Transcription. This is where we take the original video, and create an electronic version of the spoken elements, and also the captions. Usually this will need to have Timecode added, to create a specific time reference for where the new voice-over segment is to be inserted, or for where the subtitle or caption must appear.
We can then organise the translation of the content with tried and trusted in-country professionals. This process is not just a straight translation of the written Transcription because there are timing factors to take into account. Firstly, the translator has to know if the translation is for voice-over or for subtitles, as the outcome will be very different. Translation for voice-over requires the translator to make sure that the translated script will still fit within the time constraints of the original video. This may mean that some sentences will have to be adapted to make them shorter.
Translation for subtitles usually means that the script has to be shortened, so that the new text fits in two lines on the screen. Often this means the text needs to be a condensed version of the original. To understand this process requires specific skills for the translator. Using a translator who doesn’t have experience in these matters will lead to an inferior product, and can waste a lot of production time and budget!

Voice-over recording services
At Matinée Multilingual, we have two voice recording studios, built to exacting BBC specification. This means the acoustics have been designed to make spoken recordings crisp and clear with a minimum of reflected sound within the recordings. Also, the voice booth is sound proofed to cut out all external noise so that the recordings remain clean and pure. Equipment we use:
– Avid Pro Tools HD 10 with 192 I/O interface and SYNC Hardware
– Avalon AD2022 Dual Channel Pure Class A Preamplifier
– Neumann U87 mics
– Quested H108 monitors

Case Study: Video translation for Microsoft Windows Live Messenger demo
Microsoft required a voice-over agency and video translation service to localise a set of Microsoft Windows Live Messenger 2011 product demonstration videos in 37 languages. Matinée’s expertise in visual translation was recognised by Microsoft’s translation vendor.
We were selected to provide both voice-over and video translation services. For every language we cast and recorded a native female voice-over artist and recorded time-sync to the US-English voice-over track. Then video translations were created using the Adobe After Effects source files. We had to adjust the animation timings to match the new audio. And finally we encoded the videos in 6 different file formats.
Subtitling & Captions
Sometimes it is easier and more cost effective to subtitle your video, rather than re-voicing the soundtrack in a foreign language. We have been subtitling video for well over 10 years, and are one of the busiest subtitling studios in the UK. Many well know corporates trust us with their subtitling work as you will see from examples below. And many of our customers are also well know Translation Companies, who don’t have production skills in-house, and farm out the work to specialists like ourselves.

Delivery of the finished project
Whatever format your require, in any size or resolution, we’ll deliver perfect versions of your project every time. And what’s more, if there are any problems encountered along the way, you know that apart from the translations, all the work is done in-house at our studios in Reading. We have a staff of twenty two, so we are small enough to give you the personalised service you want, and large enough to have a very broad skill set to cater for any requirement, and solve any challenge.
How we work
Video translations are easy with Matinée Multilingual. Our experienced Project Managers will first review the video source files to identify any missing files, plugins, fonts or effects. We’ll tell you what is editable and what may have to be re-created. We’ll transcribe the audio and extract the on-screen text from the video with time-code references, in preparation for the translations.
Whether you choose voice-over or subtitling to translate the audio, we can provide both services in-house. We can also localise any graphics in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. And once all the translations, voice-over or subtitles have been produced, we’ll rebuild the video and encode in whatever file format is required.
Adobe After Effects is the industry leading solution for creating sophisticated motion graphics and cinematic visual effects in video. Matinée’s video translation engineers are experts in Adobe After Effects translation and have the skills to localise video content and animations in any language. We also support most other video editing and animation software used by our customers, and we have provided video translations using source files in Final Cut Pro, AVID, Adobe Flash, Adobe Premier, Camtasia, PowerPoint and more.
