Origins of the Japanese language and accent

Not much is known about the Japanese language until it appeared in the 8th century. It does appear however to have a Chinese influence. Settlers from nearby pacific islands and from Asia are thought to have come to Japan and sound changes and differences in vocabulary appear between the 1100s and the 1600s. This new language was called Late Middle Japanese.

Portuguese sailors began trading with the Japanese in the 1500s and as a result, Japanese has some Portuguese loan words. Tokyo became the largest city in Japan, which influenced the dialect and eventually it became Standard Japanese. Since 1945 the Japanese language has been influenced by European words, most commonly English and this is thought to be due to the emergence of new technology.

Brazil has a large Japanese migrant community. The people began to arrive in Brazil in 1908 and many of them became coffee plantation owners.

Standard Japanese is taught in schools and used for official purposes, but there is also a common language called Kyotsugo, meaning common language and this can be heard in homes throughout Japan.

There are a large number of Japanese dialects and some, in more remote mountainous regions, are not mutually intelligible. Many European speakers now know how to speak a few words in Japanese, thanks to the popularity of computer games such as World of Warcraft and others, which feature Japanese speakers.

To hear a Japanese person speaking English with a Japanese accent, listen to the Johnathan Ross interview with Yoko Ono.
