Origins of the Estonian language and accent
Estonia has two distinct dialects, northern and southern. Northern has the city of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia and in the south there is Tartu, the country’s second largest city after Tallinn.
Estonians are thought to have originated from settlements along the Baltic Coast in 9000BC. At that time the settlers were traders and it is thought that they traded Amber, which was imported from Estonia to other parts of Europe. They also traded with the Vikings.
In 1561 the Swedes took control of Estonia and in 1632 the University of Tartu was founded by the King of Sweden. This was a time known as the ‘Swedish Golden Age’ and it is where the influence of the Swedish language comes from.
However, in 1721 Russian conquered Estonia and this led to many years of Russian rule and numerous occupations over the years. As a result of the Russian occupancy of Estonia during the 19th century, the Russian language was taught to school children in an attempt to make Estonia more Russian. But, people were able to hold on to the Estonian language by reading books that were already in print. Finally, the Soviet Union collapsed and eventually Russian authority ceased. In 1991 Estonia was granted its independence and the last soviet troops left in 1994. If you want to listen to an Estonian accent, have a look at this You Tube video which is an interview with Estonian Silver Medal Winner, Rasmus Magi. Here he is speaking English with an Estonian accent.

Friendly and efficient service
The speed of response, and friendly, efficient service from all staff was quite exceptional. Matinee particularly stands out by putting the customer’s needs first, even when the job is relatively small and a bit of a technical challenge. I would strongly recommend Matinee for any subtitling work.
