A short history of the Sylheti language
Sylhet is a large city on the banks of the Surma river in northeast Bangladesh. Other speakers of Sylheti live in the migrant communities that have settled in the United Kingdom.
Sylhet was a commercial centre in ancient times and Indo-Aryan and Dravidian tribes settled there. The language also has influences from Assamese, Arab, Chinese, Turkish and Persian people. The British colonised Sylet in 1765, it was then annexed to Assam and then with East Bengal in 1947. However, in 1971 Sylet became part of the independent country of Bangladesh.
Sylheti is the main language spoken by the people in the city and the surrounding areas. They also speak and write standard Bengali, which has differences in grammar and pronunciation.
Due to the large Bangladesh community in the United Kingdom, there are many Sylheti speakers in homes across the UK. Sylhet has a friendship link with St Albans in Hertfordshire, which was signed in 1988. It also has another friendship link with the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, which was signed in 2009. It is also twinned with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
