In this episode of You’re in Studio One, we welcomed Maria Trevis, independent filmmaker and founder of production company Baroness Studios.

Maria’s journey spans theatre production, cabaret performance, corporate communications training, and now award-winning short film.

Her debut film, ‘The Complaint’, won four awards from its first release. Her upcoming film, ‘Just A Mum’, explores postpartum psychosis.

What struck us most in this conversation was how Maria thinks about the human voice and the role it plays in creating impactful content.

She came to Matinée’s recording studio to record voice over elements for ‘Just A Mum’, wanting the on-set performance to stay natural while the audio was recorded separately.

Her creative instinct proves that the best work happens when every element, visual, audio, voice, is given its due space so that messages land with impact.

Maria also spoke about life when Covid-19 happened and how it drove her to finally venture into filmmaking.

“I had lots of little half-written scripts and sketches and outlines… numerous journals and notebooks over the years that I’ve put things in but never seemed to be able to find a way to make it happen. And I think, I don’t know, you get to a certain age, you’re in a certain life situation… you reassess where you’re going and what you want to do.”
