2022’s important voiceover trend predictions

The start of a new year is a great time for reflection and planning. Here at Matinée, we’ve taken the opportunity to look at the voiceover trends that are predicted to shape the industry over the upcoming 365 days.

As we grow to adapt to the “new normal”, it’s no surprise that Covid continues to have an effect on, well, pretty much every aspect of our lives. The voice-over industry is no different, and as we look ahead to how we can expect it to grow, the effects of the pandemic are clear to see.

So, what can we expect to see happening in the voice over industry this year? Will 2022 build on the voiceover trends from last year? Will e-learning narrations still be in high demand, and what kind of content will we see more of? We take a look at the trends that should be on your radar for 2022…

1. Conversational reads will be popular

As the last two years have largely been defined by digital conversations and interactions (thanks, Covid), audiences are now seeking ‘real’ conversations with natural and light tones.

Experts say that we’re now more sensitive to artificial experiences and in need of transparent connections, opening up a big market for conversational-style voiceovers. Plus, with the pandemic providing its fair share of dismal news over the last two years, we’re now asking for more light-hearted messages, making way for humorous and cheery voice overs in 2022.

2. High demand for e-learning and training content

As we continue working away on our laptops in our dining rooms and studies, e-learning voiceovers will continue to be in high demand. The WFH revolution goes hand-in-hand with digital learning and training so, much like last year, we can expect to see sustained demand for this type of voice over.

If you compare the state of this market now to what it was like in 2019, the effects of the pandemic are indisputable. Pre-Covid, almost 50% of all higher education institutions offered zero online programmes. Now, the situation couldn’t be more different, with the e-learning market expected to grow by $21 billion in the US alone over the next four years.

It’s clear that the need for e-learning narration and training voiceovers isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

3. Continued use of voice assistants

Much like with e-learning content, social distancing has also increased demand for voice technologies that help reduce contact. More and more businesses in industries like retail, food service, and healthcare are using voice technology to provide a touchless experience.

In 2022, we can expect an increased demand for voice artists to record messages for tasks like opening doors, operating lifts, and using vending machines. An Adobe study found that 86% of users think that voice technology could make attending events a more sanitary experience, highlighting the key function of voiceovers in helping businesses adapt to the new normal.

4. Online content will continue to take over

Okay, we know that online videos are not a ground-breaking trend never seen before this year. But their sheer power has earned them a spot on this list.

During lockdown, we relied a lot on digital media for entertainment and escapism. In fact, 42% of us spent an increased amount of time watching short-form video content during the pandemic. It comes as no surprise then that more and more businesses are incorporating short and snappy online videos into their marketing campaigns, driving up the demand for voiceovers to accompany them.

Whatever the purpose or content of the video, as audiences continue to consume online videos at a soaring rate, we can expect this to continue having an effect on the demand for the voiceovers that go with them.
